ZIKA VIRUS INFORMATION

Zika Virus MosquitoZika Virus has been making quite a few headlines recently and with good reason. There have been over 1.5 million cases reported in Brazil. Zika Virus has been linked to microcephaly, a condition that causes severe birth defects. In Brazil over 3,500 microcephaly cases have been found. Although it hasn’t been proven that Zika Virus causes microcephaly, the numbers of infant deaths and deformities has spiked since Zika was found in Brazil last May. The first case of Zika Virus directly linking it to microcephaly was reported in Hawaii this month. The CDC confirmed that the baby was infected previously and most likely contracted the virus from the mother while she was living in Brazil last year.

Zika is currently active in more than 14 countries including Venezuela, Panama, Mexico & Brazil. 12 cases have been reported in the US, though all cases were contracted in foreign countries. A travel alert has been issued by the Center for Disease Control for those traveling to and from these countries. Likewise, pregnant women are urged to delay travel plans to affected countries.
